Connecting Scientists to the Community

What is ASLA?

ASLA is a Promoter of active life-long interest in science, technology and nature. With programs for children, educators and the general public ASLA "brings science to life" in Alberta communities.

"I had so much fun my brain was about to explode! I wish we could do it again."

ASLA’s programs link scientists from industry, government and post-secondary institutions to students and communities across Alberta. Our scientists cover scientific disciplines from aeronautical engineering to zoology and bring not only their extensive knowledge and understanding of science but also their excitement and eagerness to share it and to involve the audience in the process. They use hands-on activities, show and tell, questions and answers and discussions to deliver their message. In 2005, our volunteers gave over 10,000 hours to ASLA programs inspiring Albertans with their knowledge and enthusiasm for science!

"A huge thank you to all involved in making the Family Science Olympics a reality. My daughter and I, along with 3 of our friends had a blast."

ASLA is the Umbrella Organization for five science networks based in Calgary, Edmonton, Grande Prairie, Medicine Hat and Red Deer. Each network runs programs that place volunteer scientists in the classroom, offering experiential science opportunities to students - at no cost. A wide range of other programs have also been developed to meet community needs and to capitalize on local expertise. Ranging from teacher professional development, resource kits, science fair judging, science olympics, career days, mentorship programs, science festivals, camps and workshops, the networks create strong connections between scientists and communities around the province. ASLA Supports all these initiatives, analyzes statistics, enhances common elements between networks and facilitates the sharing of best practices.

"Awesome! Theory, practical knowledge and experience delivered in an energetic presentation. Perfectly tied to curriculum. Thank you!"

ASLA is a Gateway for other organizations to access the audiences we serve. By fostering collaborations with professional organizations, academic institutions, the education community and others interested in science outreach, we frequently leverage additional opportunities from local events and visits by eminent scientists.

ASLA networks brought science outreach programs to 52,545 children and 4,354 adults (classroom and non classroom) in our last fiscal year.

1,104 classroom and non classroom visits took place.

1,031 volunteer scientists, engineers and technologists contributed 2,438 hours of "face time" with students and thousands of hours of preparation, travel and contributions to boards and committees.

Due to the generosity of volunteers and many in-kind-donations, ASLA programs to schools are usually FREE!
